She was an art school girl, with an art school girl haircut. Weary of the world, never been anywhere but the town where we were born in the town where we call home. Don’t like being together but it’s better than being alone. So we got an apartment on the wrong side of town. We paid the rent we could; she laid the mattress on the ground and we swore we’d never forget just how it felt…but I can’ t remember now. We’d lay and talk til the sun came up, or never say a thing. Skin so pale, a butterfly with broken wings. And we swore we’d never forget just how it felt…but I can’ remember now. The last words she said to me, “the truth might set you free.” So I lied and denied, and she left me.
